Overview

The most damaging disease of parsnip. Superficial brown, black or purple-black cankers form mainly on the crown and shoulder of the root, with secondary decay following. Especially serious in late-harvested and overwintered crops.
Sunken elliptical lesions on the root surface that downgrade or reject otherwise mature roots. Incidence is strongly driven by nutrition: excess potassium inhibits calcium uptake, and urea used as a sidedress nitrogen source increases incidence.
Vectored by aster leafhopper. Causes distortion and discoloration of leaves and stunted, hairy and bitter roots. Affected roots are unmarketable and the disorder is not correctable once infection has occurred.

Larvae mine the root, leaving rusty-coloured trails and blotches that render roots unmarketable, and the wounds open the way for canker pathogens. In parsnip the mines are concentrated in the upper portion of the root, where they are most visible to buyers.
Larvae tunnel in the upper third of the root; tunnels are pronounced and are frequently invaded by fungi. Young larvae feeding in stalks or roots may kill young plants outright. Damage is generally worse on organic soils.
Inflicts very little direct feeding injury but is the vector of aster yellows. Populations migrate north annually and can arrive already carrying the pathogen; they can also overwinter locally in the egg stage on weeds or winter grains.
Parsnip seed is small, slow to germinate and uncompetitive with early weed pressure over a 110-130 day season. This is the single largest cause of yield loss in the crop and the primary reason growers abandon it.
